The Uttar Pradesh government has taken a significant step to strengthen the state’s irrigation network by approving 95 new irrigation and water management projects. Once completed, these projects are expected to greatly enhance irrigation capacity, particularly benefiting farmers in Purvanchal, Terai, Bundelkhand and Western Uttar Pradesh.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that the objective of these initiatives is not limited to infrastructure development but also to improve water management, boost crop productivity and strengthen the rural economy.
During a review meeting of the Irrigation and Water Resources Department, the Chief Minister informed that the projects, to be developed at a cost of approximately ₹394.53 crore, will help restore irrigation capacity across nearly 36,000 hectares of land. Around 9 lakh farmers and rural residents are expected to benefit directly from these works.
The Chief Minister instructed officials to complete all tasks on time and with top-quality standards. The projects related to canal restoration and improvement will include several key components:
These works will significantly streamline the canal network and offer farmers improved irrigation access.
Officials stated that upon completion, these projects will greatly strengthen the state’s irrigation network. Farmers from Purvanchal, the Terai belt, Bundelkhand, and Western Uttar Pradesh will gain the most. The Chief Minister reiterated that the government aims to ensure that no farmer loses crops due to a lack of irrigation.
Better Use of Idle Government Land: The Chief Minister also directed the department to survey unused government land in the state and prepare a detailed plan for its productive utilization. He emphasized that effectively using such land could also help increase departmental revenue.
The meeting also reviewed flood management preparations. The Chief Minister instructed officials to begin planning for next year’s flood-control measures starting from January. He added that suggestions from public representatives should be incorporated to ensure timely and effective action.
