The Department of Farmers' Welfare and Agriculture Development has advised farmers in the district to get their soil tested. According to the department, maintaining the quality and health of the soil is crucial for achieving higher crop yields, and soil testing is a key step in that direction.
Deputy Director of Agriculture, Dr. S.K. Nigam, stated that the primary objective of soil testing is to evaluate the soil's quality and determine the levels of essential nutrients present. This helps farmers understand the current condition of their land and take necessary steps to improve it.
According to Dr. Nigam, the first step in soil testing is collecting soil samples correctly. Farmers can collect the samples themselves or seek assistance from their local agricultural extension officer. Soil samples should be taken from different parts of the field to get an accurate assessment of the entire plot. Proper sampling methods lead to more accurate test results.
The collected samples are sent to soil testing laboratories, where parameters like pH level, organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrient content are measured. These labs use advanced equipment and technology to ensure reliable results. Based on the analysis, farmers are informed about nutrient deficiencies and how to address them.
Measures to Improve Acidic Soil:
Dr. Nigam mentioned that often, soil is found to be acidic during testing—meaning the pH level is below 6.5. In such soils, the availability of nutrients is reduced, which adversely affects crop yield.
Here are some effective measures for improving acidic soil:
A Vital Step toward Soil Fertility: Based on soil test results, farmers can take appropriate steps to enhance soil fertility, which will not only increase crop yields but also maintain the long-term productivity of the land. The agriculture department urges farmers to get their soil tested in time and follow scientific advice for better farming outcomes.
