Marking 50 years of Uttar Pradesh’s Horticulture Department, the state government is organizing a series of horticulture conferences aimed at increasing farmers’ income and promoting high-value crops. One such significant event was recently held at Chaudhary Charan Singh University in Meerut, drawing participation from farmers of the Meerut and Saharanpur regions.
State Horticulture Minister Mr. Dinesh Pratap Singh highlighted that alongside traditional farming, horticulture is emerging as a more profitable alternative for farmers. Cultivation of crops like capsicum, strawberries, flowers, spices, and honey is offering farmers higher returns. In particular, honey production in Meerut and Saharanpur has gained national and international recognition for the state.
To support this shift, the Uttar Pradesh government is offering subsidies and financial assistance for protected cultivation. The minister encouraged farmers to diversify beyond conventional crops and adopt cash and horticulture-based farming that aligns with market demand, ensuring better price realization.
The government is also facilitating the setup of food processing units at the grassroots level. These units help extend the shelf life of perishable crops like tomatoes and turmeric, enabling value addition and increasing profits. This not only enhances income but also creates new employment opportunities in rural areas.
Technical Training and Farmer Interaction: During the conference, experts provided technical guidance on cultivating fruits, vegetables, spices, flowers, and medicinal plants. Farmers shared their challenges, and discussions focused on shifting toward market-oriented farming practices for sustained income growth.
A Step Toward Prosperity: With consistent government initiatives in horticulture and food processing, farmers in Uttar Pradesh now have better avenues to improve their livelihood. These efforts are laying the foundation for the vision of “Prosperous Farmers, Prosperous State,” empowering rural communities and strengthening the agricultural economy.
