India’s digital agriculture push gains pace: 1.018 billion farmer IDs created, drones and satellite technology set to transform farming

YES-TECH Enables Scientific Yield Estimation:

The Yield Estimation System based on Technology (YES-TECH) uses satellite data and advanced crop yield models to estimate crop productivity at the insurance unit level. The technology complements traditional Crop Cutting Experiments (CCEs), helping generate more accurate yield estimates and better reflect localized crop conditions.

Smart Sampling Improves Crop Cutting Experiments:

Instead of relying solely on random field selection, satellite-derived vegetation indices are now used to identify variations in crop health. This allows authorities to select more representative locations for Crop Cutting Experiments, reducing manual bias while improving efficiency and data accuracy.

Faster Resolution of Crop Insurance Disputes:

Time-series satellite imagery enables objective monitoring of crop conditions throughout the growing season. The technology helps resolve disputes related to crop area and yield between state governments and insurance companies more quickly, leading to faster settlement of insurance claims.

Rapid Assessment during Floods and Droughts:

During natural disasters such as floods, droughts, and other extreme weather events, multi-temporal satellite imagery combined with the Krishi Decision Support System (DSS) enables rapid mapping of affected areas. This significantly reduces the time required to assess crop damage and supports quicker response measures.

Government Expands Support for Agricultural Drones:

The government is also promoting the adoption of agricultural drones to improve farm mechanization and precision agriculture. Under the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM), agriculture graduates and small and marginal farmers in the North-Eastern States are eligible for financial assistance of up to 50% for purchasing Kisan Drones. Other eligible farmers can receive 40% financial assistance, while the same level of support is also available for establishing Custom Hiring Centres for drone services. So far, 2,122 agricultural drones have been distributed or approved under the scheme.

'Namo Drone Didi' Scheme Empowers Women in Agriculture:

To promote women's participation in technology-led farming, the Namo Drone Didi Scheme is providing selected Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) with comprehensive 15-day agricultural drone training, including certification for obtaining a Drone Pilot Licence. Training is being conducted through 274 DGCA-approved Remote Pilot Training Organisations (RPTOs) across the country. Under the scheme, 1,094 drones have already been provided to selected Women Self-Help Groups, enabling them to offer drone-based agricultural services while creating new livelihood opportunities.
