The sowing operations for the Kharif season of 2025–26 (July–June) are still in progress, and the first advance estimates for major crops have yet to be released. Data from the past three years indicates year-on-year variations in both acreage and production for several Kharif crops.

Three-Year Trend in Kharif Crop Acreage:

According to the third advance estimates for 2024–25, paddy acreage stood at 43.413 million hectares, marking a 6.58% increase from the previous year. Maize covered 8.43 million hectares (up 1.21%), while tur (pigeon pea) accounted for 4.328 million hectares (up 4.77%). In contrast, urad (black gram) saw a sharp decline of 21.63%. Significant Surge in Paddy, Maize, and Moong Production:

Paddy production reached 121.854 million tonnes, a 7.59% increase over last year. Maize output grew by 11.68%, while moong registered a remarkable 51.39% rise. On the other hand, urad production fell by 18.83%. Groundnut and soybean production increased by 19.72% and 16.21%, respectively, whereas cotton and sugarcane production declined.

Government Measures for Farmers:

Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Mr. Ramnath Thakur, stated that the government has taken several steps to mitigate losses caused by natural calamities:

  1. Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY): Launched in 2016, this scheme offers affordable and comprehensive crop insurance covering all non-preventable natural risks from sowing to post-harvest stages.
  2. Disaster Relief: The primary responsibility for disaster management lies with state governments. Relief is provided through the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), while additional assistance is given from the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) during severe calamities.
  3. National Food Security and Nutrition Mission (NFSNM): Implemented in 28 states and the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, this mission aims to boost production and productivity by supporting farmers with quality seeds, technical training, nutrient and pest management, and demonstration programs.
