Overuse of DAP and Urea Weakening Soil; NPK and SSP Fertilizers Can Improve Yield and Soil Health

Soybean is one of the major Kharif crops cultivated in Madhya Pradesh. With the rising prices of chemical fertilizers, agricultural experts stress the importance of using fertilizers in a balanced and need-based manner to achieve better crop yields. According to the Agriculture Department, a stock of 23,577 quintals of certified soybean seeds has been made available in the district for the current Kharif season. Fertilizer stock includes 22,816 metric tonnes of Urea, 5,137 metric tonnes of DAP, 12,673 metric tonnes of SSP, and 3,831 metric tonnes of NPK.

Ample Stock with Wholesalers and Private Dealers:

Wholesalers have 10,439 metric tonnes of Urea, 1,007 metric tonnes of DAP, and 1,146 metric tonnes of NPK available. Similarly, private dealers have a stock of 7,635 metric tonnes of Urea, 1,326 metric tonnes of DAP, and 1,558 metric tonnes of NPK.

Excessive Use of DAP and Urea May Lead to Nutrient Deficiency:

According to Mr. Pandey, DAP and Urea primarily provide Nitrogen and Phosphorus, but their continuous overuse may lead to a deficiency of Potash and micronutrients in the soil. Potash enhances plant health, grain quality, and disease resistance—factors that help fetch better market prices.

NPK and SSP Fertilizers to Boost Yield and Soil Fertility: Agricultural experts suggest that complex fertilizers like NPK contain all three essential nutrients: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potash. SSP (Single Super Phosphate) also offers Sulphur and Calcium along with Phosphorus, which are crucial for enhancing soil fertility and crop strength.

Alternative Fertilizers to DAP Readily Available for Farmers: Farmers are advised to use DAP and Urea only as per crop requirements and to buy certified fertilizers from cooperative societies or authorized dealers. The following alternatives to DAP are available in the district in sufficient quantity:

  • NPK (12:32:16) – 591 metric tonnes
  • NPK (16:16:16) – 566 metric tonnes
  • NPK (24:24:0) – 43.75 metric tonnes
  • NPK (20:20:0) – 160 metric tonnes
  • NPK S (20:20:0:13) – 3,430 metric tonnes

Appeal from Agriculture Department: The Agriculture Department has appealed to all farmers to choose fertilizers based on scientific guidance and shift towards balanced alternatives to DAP. This practice will not only increase productivity but also help maintain long-term soil health.
