Rice is one of the most important food crops, but insect infestations during different growth stages can significantly affect productivity and grain quality. Agricultural experts advise farmers to regularly monitor their fields because early identification and timely management of pests can substantially reduce crop losses. Different pests attack the crop at different growth stages, making stage-specific monitoring and control practices extremely important for successful rice cultivation.
Stem borer infestation is commonly observed between 15 and 30 days after transplanting. The larvae enter the stem and feed internally, causing damage to the growing plant. Affected plants show drying of the central shoot, commonly known as “dead heart.” At later stages, the infestation may lead to empty white panicles, causing direct yield losses.
Between 20 and 50 days after planting, leaf folder infestation may increase. The pest folds rice leaves and feeds from inside, reducing the green leaf area. Damaged leaves appear rolled and tubular, affecting photosynthesis and limiting plant growth. Severe infestations can reduce crop vigor and productivity.
Rice hispa infestation generally occurs between 25 and 60 days after sowing or transplanting. The pest scrapes the upper leaf surface, leaving white streaks and scratch-like marks. Heavy infestation may result in drying of leaves and reduced photosynthetic activity, ultimately affecting grain formation.
Brown Planthopper Can Cause Severe Crop Losses: Brown planthopper is considered one of the most destructive rice pests and usually appears between 40 and 80 days of crop growth. The insect sucks plant sap, causing yellowing and drying of plants. Under severe infestation, entire patches of the field may dry up, a condition commonly known as “hopper burn.”
White-Backed Planthopper Also Requires Attention: Similar to brown planthopper, the white-backed planthopper feeds on plant sap and weakens crop growth. Infested plants exhibit yellowing, reduced vigor and stunted growth. Regular monitoring is essential to prevent large-scale damage.
Gundhi Bug attacks During Panicle Emergence: As the crop enters the flowering and panicle emergence stage, gundhi bug infestation may increase. The insect sucks sap from developing grains, resulting in shriveled grains and poor grain quality. Infested grains may develop an unpleasant odor, reducing their market value.
White Ear Stage Caused by Stem Borer: From panicle emergence to grain-filling stage, stem borer can again damage the crop. Affected panicles turn completely white and remain empty without grain formation. This condition, known as “white ear,” can lead to significant yield losses if not managed promptly.
Agricultural experts recommend regular field scouting to detect pest populations at an early stage. Pest management decisions should be based on Economic Threshold Levels (ETL) to avoid unnecessary pesticide use. Integrated pest management practices such as balanced fertilizer application, proper water management, pheromone traps, biological control agents and need-based chemical control can effectively minimize pest damage while protecting the environment.
