A mother's greatness is immeasurable. While our mother gives us life, it is the foster Mother through her earth and its Soil that sustains us. We eat, and live because of the nourishment that we receive from her soil. On this International Mother’s Day, let us bow in reverence to both our Mother who gave us life and our Mother Earth. It is time for us make a collective to protect and serve it.
We need to pass on a healthy and fertile Soil and Land to our future generations. Unfortunately, we ourselves are damaging it through the excessive and thoughtless use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides. Research indicates that the world is losing 24 billion tons of fertile topsoil annually due to unsustainable agricultural practices. Once this top layer is lost, it may take centuries to regenerate a new top Soil.
Nearly 95% of our food supply comes from the soil beneath our own fields. Therefore, on this Mother's Day, let all farmers unite in their resolve to preserve soil fertility and health. This would be a true tribute to our Mother.
Observed on May 11 every year, Mother's Day is an opportunity to honor both with gratitude for helping us to live with food, water, air, and shelter.
With climate change and overexploitation of natural resources taking a toll, Mother Earth is in distress. As farmers—her closest companions—it is our responsibility to safeguard her well-being. Let us commit to water conservation, reduce chemical inputs, adopt organic farming, and improve soil health. Steps like farm ponds, recharging wells, tree plantation, and crop diversification will breathe new life into our land.
Just as a mother gives her children unconditional love and care, let us give back to our Mother the gift of protection, respect, and restoration.
