Potato prices have remained largely consumer-friendly during the winter season, bringing relief to households and the food service industry ahead of New Year celebrations. A comparison of November and December market data from major mandis shows that prices have either declined or stayed stable, mainly due to a sharp rise in arrivals. With the fresh rabi crop expected to enter markets in larger volumes from January, prices are likely to ease further.
Mumbai’s Vashi APMC, potato prices showed a clear downward trend. The modal price declined from ₹1,460 per quintal in November to ₹1,195 in December, while arrivals increased significantly from 17,360 metric tonnes to over 25,000 metric tonnes. The higher inflow helped contain prices despite steady urban demand.
Delhi: Softer Prices Benefit Consumers:
Delhi’s Keshopur APMC also witnessed a notable fall in prices. Average potato prices dropped from ₹1,553 per quintal in November to ₹1,028 in December, supported by an increase in arrivals from 4,556 to 6,480 metric tonnes. This trend indicates adequate supply conditions in the national capital.

Lucknow: Stable Demand, Improved Availability:
Lucknow APMC, prices declined from ₹1,300 to ₹1,025 per quintal between November and December. At the same time, arrivals rose from 10,450 to 15,410 metric tonnes, reflecting better availability from producing regions and easing pressure on prices.
Kanpur: Sharp Jump in Arrivals Brings Price Relief:
Kanpur’s potato market saw one of the most dramatic increases in arrivals. While prices fell from ₹1,206 to ₹840 per quintal, arrivals surged from 13,250 metric tonnes in November to over 1.27 lakh metric tonnes in December. The massive supply influx played a key role in stabilizing prices.
Indore: Prices Largely Stable Despite Higher Inflow:
Unlike other markets, Indore APMC recorded a marginal price increase from ₹997 to ₹1,030 per quintal, even as arrivals jumped from 1,299 to 6,186 metric tonnes. This suggests balanced demand from processing units and local consumption keeping prices steady.
Overall, the November–December comparison shows that higher arrivals have kept potato prices under control across major markets. With the new crop expected to flood mandis in the coming weeks, potatoes are likely to remain affordable—making winter snacks like chips and potato fries easy on the pocket during the festive season and beyond.
