IMD Weather Alert: Very Dense Fog and Severe Cold to Intensify Across North India, Bihar and Hill States

Weather conditions are changing rapidly across several parts of the country. During the last week of December, North India, Bihar Weather Today, Odisha and the hill states are likely to witness dense to very dense fog, severe cold and cold winds, with the intensity expected to increase further. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), visibility may drop sharply during morning and night hours in many states between December 22 and 29. Warnings have also been issued for cold wave conditions, rainfall and snowfall during this period.

States Likely to Be Affected by Dense Fog:

As per the forecast, Punjab may experience very dense fog until December 27. In Uttar Pradesh, foggy conditions are expected on December 23 and again between December 25 and 28, especially during morning and night hours. Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi may face dense fog from December 24 to 27, impacting daily activities and travel.
In the western Himalayan region, fog is likely to persist at some locations from December 22 to 27. Bihar and Odisha may witness foggy conditions between December 22 and 27, while Rajasthan, northern Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and northern Madhya Pradesh could see fog until December 25. Several parts of Northeast India are also expected to remain under fog cover between December 22 and 25.

Cold Wave Conditions:

Severe cold conditions are likely in eastern Uttar Pradesh on December 22. On the same day, cold day conditions may prevail in western Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand. Bihar is expected to remain under the influence of a cold wave from December 22 to 26, increasing health risks, especially for children and the elderly.

Rainfall and Snowfall in Hill Areas:

Light to moderate rainfall and snowfall are likely in higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Snowfall is particularly expected on December 22, 23, 27 and 28, which may further intensify the cold conditions. Residents in hilly regions have been advised to remain cautious of slippery roads and extreme cold.

Further Drop in Temperatures Expected:

Over the past 24 hours, temperatures have dropped sharply in several regions. In some areas, minimum temperatures have fallen below 5°C. Barabanki in eastern Uttar Pradesh recorded the lowest temperature at 4.5°C. According to IMD, temperatures across North India may fall further in the coming days, leading to harsher cold conditions.
