IMD issues rain & thunderstorm alert in many states, snowfall and hail likely in hills

Weather conditions are expected to change rapidly across many parts of India over the next few days. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), several states in North, Northeast, East and South India are likely to witness thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and moderate rainfall. Rain, Snowfall and Strong Winds Likely in Hill States:

Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and Uttarakhand are expected to receive light to moderate rainfall along with snowfall in higher altitudes between May 13 and 14. Himachal Pradesh may continue to witness unstable weather conditions from May 13 to 16.

IMD has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph in several hill regions. In Jammu & Kashmir, wind speeds could gust up to 70 kmph on May 13. Isolated hailstorm activity is also possible in parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Thunderstorms and Rain Expected in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh:

Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds on May 13 and 14. Similar weather activity is expected in parts of Uttar Pradesh on May 13, where wind speeds may range between 30 and 60 kmph.

Northeast India on Alert for Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall:

Northeastern states are expected to witness widespread rainfall and thunderstorm activity over the coming days. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya may experience continuous rain and stormy conditions between May 13 and 16. The weather department has issued a heavy rainfall warning for Arunachal Pradesh and Assam until May 18. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are also likely to witness intense rainfall between May 14 and 17. Some areas of Assam and Meghalaya may receive very heavy rainfall from May 13 to 17, while Arunachal Pradesh could witness extremely heavy showers on May 17 and 18.

Bihar, Jharkhand and Bengal May Witness Severe Thunderstorms:

Eastern India is also expected to remain under the influence of active weather systems. Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Sikkim may experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds between May 13 and 16. Strong squally winds with speeds reaching up to 70 kmph are likely in Bihar on May 13 and in Jharkhand on May 15 and 16. Heavy rainfall warnings have also been issued for Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on May 13 and 14. Meanwhile, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands may continue to receive heavy rainfall until May 18.

Chhattisgarh and Southern States to See Active Weather:

Chhattisgarh is likely to witness light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds from May 13 to 16. In South India, weather activity is expected to intensify across Kerala, Mahe, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Rayalaseema during the same period. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal may receive heavy rainfall on May 14 and 15. Parts of Karnataka are also under hailstorm alert. North Interior Karnataka may witness hailstorms on May 14 and 15, while South Interior Karnataka could experience isolated hail activity on May 15.

Temperatures Likely to Rise in Several Regions:

IMD has forecast a gradual rise in maximum temperatures across many parts of the country. Northwest India, excluding Rajasthan, may see temperatures increase by 4°C to 6°C between May 13 and 18. Central India could witness a rise of 2°C to 4°C during the same period. Eastern India may experience a temperature increase of 2°C to 3°C until May 16. Gujarat is likely to see a slight fall in temperatures after May 15, while Maharashtra may continue to witness rising temperatures until May 15 before stabilizing.
