Potato Market Update: Prices Crash Below ₹500 in Some Mandis While Traders Offer Up to ₹2,000 in Others

Potato Prices Today - (17 May, 2026)
Potato Prices Today - (17 May, 2026)

Potato farmers are currently witnessing two completely different market trends. While prices in major Delhi mandis have dropped sharply due to heavy arrivals, some markets in Maharashtra are still offering rates as high as ₹2,020 per quintal. This huge difference in prices on the same day has left many farmers wondering where they can earn the best returns.

According to the latest mandi report dated 17 May 2026, the biggest factors influencing the potato market right now are supply, quality, and local demand. Markets receiving heavy arrivals are facing price pressure, whereas mandis with limited supply and better-quality produce are offering stronger prices.

This means farmers who focus on the right mandi selection, proper timing, and better grading of produce can still earn good profits even in a weak market.

Market Analysis: Arrivals and Price Trends:

Mumbai Onion & Potato Market APMC recorded the highest arrivals at 827.7 tonnes, followed closely by Delhi’s Azadpur APMC with 809.5 tonnes. Due to such large supplies, prices remained under pressure in these markets.

Strong arrivals were also reported in Ghazipur APMC and Pune APMC, which kept prices weak for average-quality potatoes.

The highest price of the day was recorded at Kamthi APMC, where potatoes sold up to ₹2,020 per quintal. Pune (Manjari) APMC also witnessed strong prices reaching ₹1,800 per quintal.

Markets such as Junnar (Narayangaon), Pune, and Sangli reported rates between ₹1,500 and ₹1,600, indicating strong demand for good-quality produce and limited supply.

On the other hand, Azadpur mandi recorded the lowest price at just ₹200 per quintal. Keshopur APMC saw sales beginning from ₹350, while Akola and Pune markets started around ₹500 per quintal.

The overall trend remains clear: Low supply and better quality potatoes are fetching premium prices, while heavily supplied markets continue to face price pressure.

Advice for Farmers:

  • Farmers should separate clean, large-sized, and high-quality potatoes through proper grading, as better-quality produce is attracting premium rates.
  • Avoid rushing to sell in high-arrival markets such as Delhi, where prices remain under pressure.
  • Farmers with cold storage facilities may benefit from phased selling, as prices could improve later.
  • Keep a close watch on markets like Kamthi, Pune (Manjari), and Sangli, where demand remains strong and arrivals are comparatively lower.
