Weather Update: Changing Conditions Across North India, Impact of Rain, Snowfall and Cold to Intensify

Weather conditions across North India are set to become active once again, bringing the combined impact of cold temperatures, rainfall and snowfall from the Himalayan region to the adjoining plains. Due to the influence of a western disturbance, rainfall and snowfall activity is expected to intensify over the Himalayan states, while Uttarakhand and several plains of North India are also likely to experience unsettled weather. Residents in some regions are advised to remain alert for thunderstorms, dense fog and cold wave conditions.

Weather System to Intensify Over Himalayan States:

Weather patterns over the mountainous regions of North India are likely to change in the coming days. Between January 19 and 21, isolated to scattered light to moderate rain and snowfall is expected over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh. From January 22 to 24, the intensity of rain and snowfall may increase further. On January 23, isolated heavy snowfall is likely over Kashmir–Ladakh and the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh.

Rainfall to Extend from Uttarakhand to the Plains:

Uttarakhand may witness light to moderate rain and snowfall on January 21 and 22, while widespread rainfall is likely across several areas during January 23 and 24. During this period, isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall is also expected over parts of Punjab, Haryana weather, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Thunderstorm Alert Issued: Thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning is likely over Uttarakhand on January 23 and 24. Similar conditions may prevail over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and Rajasthan on January 22 and 23.

Gradual Rise in Minimum Temperatures:

No significant change in minimum temperatures is expected over northwest India during the next three days. Thereafter, temperatures may rise by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius. In Maharashtra, Gujarat, eastern and central India, minimum temperatures are likely to increase gradually by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the coming days.

Dense Fog and Cold Wave Warning: Dense fog is likely to prevail during morning and night hours over parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Bihar, west Rajasthan and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has issued a cold wave alert for isolated areas of Himachal Pradesh and Odisha.
