Use Herbicides, Insecticides, and Fungicides Wisely – Agricultural Expert Advises Farmers

In view of the changing weather patterns and crop conditions, farmers have been advised to use herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides only based on scientific recommendations. Dr. Saurav Gupta, Agrometeorology and Agriculture Expert at the District Agro-Meteorological Unit, Khandwa, has warned that the uninformed use of chemicals can cause serious damage to crops.

Avoid Mixing Chemicals without Knowledge:

Dr. Gupta emphasized that farmers should refrain from mixing two or more agro-chemicals unless guided by an expert, as this could lead to crop burn or even complete crop failure. He urged farmers to carefully read the label or instruction leaflet provided by the manufacturer, which includes essential details like dosage, application method, and recommended crops.

Avoid Surface Spraying of Urea and DAP:

Instead of sprinkling Urea or DAP on the crop surface, farmers are advised to use 18:18:18 fertilizer by dissolving 10 grams per litre of water and spraying it on crops, if necessary.
In case of moisture stress or crop stress, a spray of Paclobutrazol 40% at 3 ml per 15 litres of water can be applied. During the flowering stage, spraying of Sagarika at 2 ml per litre or Chlormequat Chloride at 1 ml per litre is recommended for better growth.

Use Nano Fertilizers during Pod and Fruit Formation:

During the pod, cob, or head formation stages, farmers should spray nano urea or nano DAP at a rate of 4 ml per litre. This helps improve crop quality and enhances yield.

Ensure Proper Irrigation and Drainage: Dr. Gupta advised that during low rainfall conditions, light irrigation should be provided during the flowering and pod formation stages. In case of heavy rainfall, proper drainage arrangements must be made to prevent waterlogging and crop damage.

Simple Methods for Pest Control: If the population of caterpillars or sucking pests is low, farmers are encouraged to avoid chemical use and instead install “T”-shaped stakes and yellow sticky traps (15 to 20 per acre) to monitor and control pests.

Seek Expert Help Within 24 Hours in Case of Problems: Farmers are advised to immediately contact nearby agricultural experts or department officers within 24 hours if any issue or uncertainty arises with the crop. Timely action can prevent major losses and ensure proper crop management.
