Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, returned to India on April 21 after completing his official visit to Brazil. His visit was not only to lead the Indian delegation at the 15th BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting but also to initiate crucial steps for enhancing agricultural trade, technology transfer, and innovation between India and Brazil.

Promoting Soybean Production and Export:

During his visit, Shri Chouhan emphasized the need to boost soybean production and export in India. He expressed his intent to equip Indian farmers with the benefits of global agricultural technologies. He believes that collective efforts by various nations are essential for strengthening global food security.

Emphasis on Empowering Small Farmers:

At the BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting, Shri Chouhan raised concerns about the challenges faced by small farmers in India. He stressed that unless smallholder farmers are protected and empowered, the goal of global food security will remain incomplete. Reaffirming India’s commitment to inclusive, equitable, and sustainable agriculture, he echoed the Indian philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (The world is one family), and highlighted the need for mutual trust and cooperation among nations.

Collaboration in Agricultural Technology, Innovation, and Trade:

Shri Chouhan advocated for enhanced cooperation among BRICS nations in areas such as agricultural technology transfer, research, food processing, and trade facilitation. He emphasized that such partnerships can greatly benefit farmers and agri-enterprises across the participating countries.

Opportunities for Indian Agriculture in Brazil: Shri Chouhan’s visit was not just diplomatic, but a concrete initiative to explore technological innovations, boosts agricultural productivity, and foster global partnerships that can directly benefit Indian agriculture. Discussions were held on biofuels, agricultural machinery, and supply chain integration, which could give Indian farmers access to advanced technologies. Brazil’s remarkable agricultural export growth over the last five decades served as an inspiration for India.

Learning from Brazil’s Agricultural Model: The Minister expressed interest in learning from Brazil’s agricultural practices, including mechanization, irrigation, and research. He emphasized the need to adapt these innovations in India to maximize benefits for farmers. Both countries are exploring opportunities for collaboration in soybean production and processing.

Encouraging Investments for Agricultural Growth: While India currently imports soybean oil, both nations are now working on joint ventures to develop soybean production technologies and establish processing plants in India. This partnership is expected to boost soybean output and exports from India.

Commitment to Environmental Protection: Shri Chouhan continued his daily practice of planting a sapling during his stay in Brazil. He participated in a tree plantation drive at the Indian Embassy in Brasilia under the initiative ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ (One Tree in the Name of Mother), promoting environmental consciousness and reverence for motherhood.

Interaction with the Indian Diaspora: During his visit to São Paulo, Shri Chouhan met with members of the Indian diaspora and appreciated their contributions to strengthening bilateral relations. He highlighted that this is the “Amrit Kaal” (golden era) of India’s independence, and reiterated the country’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
