Time to Embrace Natural Farming: State Government to Launch Promotion Plan

Natural Farming

Natural farming, a sustainable and traditional agricultural practice, relies on indigenous resources like cow dung, cow urine, neem, buttermilk, and other organic inputs, eliminating the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides. This eco-friendly method not only preserves soil fertility but also safeguards the environment.

Addressing farmers at the "Ek Chaupal – In the Name of Natural Farming" event held in Jabalpur, Gujarat Governor and a strong advocate of natural farming, Acharya Devvrat, emphasized the urgent need to shift from chemical-based agriculture to natural farming. He stated that to protect the earth, water, livestock, environment, and human health, adopting natural methods is essential.

Health Threats of Chemical Farming:

Governor Devvrat raised concerns about the excessive use of chemicals and synthetic fertilizers in modern farming, calling it hazardous to human health. He described how this “sweet poison” enters the body through fruits, vegetables, and milk, contributing to the rise in lifestyle diseases like heart ailments, diabetes, and kidney failure—even among children with no harmful habits. According to him, the root cause lies in our chemically contaminated food.

Declining Soil Fertility:

He pointed out that continuous chemical use has drastically depleted soil fertility. Before the Green Revolution, Indian soils had 2–2.5% organic carbon content. That number has now dropped to just 0.2–0.3%, rendering vast tracts of land barren. He also noted that the Government of India spends over ₹1.25 lakh crore annually on subsidies for urea and DAP fertilizers—posing a major economic burden.

Organic Farming Not the Complete Answer:

Acharya Devvrat clarified that organic farming also has its limitations. The methane gas released in this method is 22 times more harmful than carbon dioxide and contributes to global warming. Additionally, it involves high input costs and lower yields in initial years, which discourages farmers from switching.

Natural Farming: Affordable and Effective:

Describing it as a practical and cost-effective alternative, the Governor said natural farming enhances soil health and reduces water usage by nearly 50%. It also helps replenish groundwater levels and yields healthier crops, ensuring better returns for farmers. Moreover, it can help the government cut down on massive fertilizer subsidies.

State Government to Develop Natural Farming Strategy:

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav announced that the state will soon formulate a dedicated policy to promote natural farming. He emphasized the growing potential for this method in the state and assured that strategic support will be provided so that more farmers can benefit. The initiative aims to secure a sustainable and healthier future for the coming generations.
