To provide a new dimension to the economic empowerment of women in urban areas, the Madhya Pradesh government has launched the “Deendayal Jan-Ajeevika Yojana (Urban)”. Initially, the scheme has been rolled out as a pilot project in Bhopal, Indore, and Ujjain districts.
This new initiative has been implemented nationwide by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, starting October 1, 2024. Earlier, on September 23, 2013, the ministry replaced the Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY) with the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM), which remained operational until September 30, 2024.
From September 2013 to September 2024, Madhya Pradesh saw extensive implementation of DAY-NULM. During this period: 65,599 Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs),
2,309 Area Level Federations, and 106 City Level Federations were established, empowering over 6.5 lakh urban women to become self-reliant.
Key achievements include:
Support for Self-Employment: To boost self-employment, around 30,000 women in the state received loans amounting to ₹253 crore through various banks under the DAY-NULM framework. Under the PM SVANidhi Scheme, additional financial support was extended:
Skill Training Boosts Self-Reliance: To enhance the skills of women SHG members, joint efforts under AMRUT 2.0 and DAY-NULM were undertaken to train them as “Amrit Mitras”. This initiative has proven effective in fostering self-reliance and has shown notable positive impact across society.
