Record-Breaking Growth in Agriculture: New Milestones Achieved in Rice, Wheat, and Oilseed Production

According to the final agricultural production estimates for 2024–25 released by the Ministry of Agriculture, India has recorded an impressive 8% rise in foodgrain output. Total foodgrain production has increased from 332.30 million tonnes in 2023–24 to 357.73 million tonnes in 2024–25.

Union Agriculture Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan expressed gratitude to the nation’s farmers for achieving this historic milestone. He highlighted that India has witnessed an extraordinary increase of 106 million tonnes in foodgrain production over the past decade. The country’s output has risen from 251.54 million tonnes in 2015–16 to 357.73 million tonnes today, reflecting the rapid progress of the agricultural sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

Record Output in Rice and Wheat:

The Agriculture Minister stated that several key crops reached their highest-ever production levels in 2024–25:

  1. Rice production increased from 137.825 million tonnes to 150.184 million tonnes, the highest ever recorded.
  2. Wheat output rose from 113.292 million tonnes to 117.945 million tonnes, also reaching a new peak.

Additionally, the following crops showed strong performance:

  1. Moong: 4.244 million tonnes
  2. Soybean: 15.268 million tonnes
  3. Groundnut: 11.942 million tonnes
  4. Maize: 43.409 million tonnes (up from 37.665 million tonnes last year)
  5. Millets (Shree Anna): 18.592 million tonnes

Significant Rise in Oilseed Production:

The government’s ongoing Oilseed Mission has delivered encouraging results. Oilseed output increased from 39.669 million tonnes in 2023–24 to 42.989 million tonnes in 2024–25.

  1. Soybean: up from 13.062 to 15.268 million tonnes (record)
  2. Groundnut: up from 10.180 to 11.942 million tonnes (record)
  3. Rapeseed-Mustard: 12.667 million tonnes

Crop-Wise Production Figures (2024–25):

  1. Rice: 150.184 million tonnes
  2. Wheat: 117.945 million tonnes
  3. Coarse Cereals: 63.921 million tonnes
  4. Maize: 43.409 million tonnes
  5. Total Pulses: 25.683 million tonnes
  6. Millets (Shree Anna): 18.592 million tonnes
  7. Chickpea: 11.114 million tonnes
  8. Moong: 4.244 million tonnes
  9. Pigeon Pea (Tur): 3.624 million tonnes

Total Oilseeds: 42.989 million tonnes

  1. Soybean: 15.268 million tonnes
  2. Groundnut: 11.942 million tonnes
  3. Rapeseed-Mustard: 12.667 million tonnes

Other Major Crops:

  1. Sugarcane: 454.611 million tonnes
  2. Cotton: 29.724 million bales (170 kg each)
  3. Jute & Mesta: 8.802 million bales (180 kg each)

‘Pulses Self-Reliance Mission’ to Strengthen Production: Following the release of the final estimates, the Agriculture Minister reviewed future strategies with department officials. He stated that the ‘Pulses Self-Reliance Mission,’ launched under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, will significantly accelerate pulse production in the coming years. He added that assured MSP procurement of tur, urad, chana, and moong has benefitted a large number of farmers.
