The Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare has released the progress report on Rabi crop sowing up to 5 December 2025. According to the latest data, the country’s total Rabi acreage has reached 47.902 million hectares, indicating a better performance compared to the same period last year.
The total area under pulses stands at 10.621 million hectares, slightly higher than last year’s 10.578 million hectares.
Key highlights include:
The acreage under nutri-cereals and coarse grains has risen to 3.628 million hectares, up from last year’s 3.594 million hectares. Crops such as maize, ragi, small millets, and barley have recorded increases. However, jowar and bajra have seen some decline in area.
Oilseed crops have registered a combined acreage of 8.414 million hectares, up from 8.175 million hectares last year. Rapeseed–Mustard recorded the maximum rise at 7.988 million hectares, marking a growth of 0.345 million hectares. Safflower and sunflower also showed positive trends. Acreage under groundnut, sesame, and linseed declined slightly.
Wheat Sowing Sees Remarkable Surge:
Wheat, the major Rabi crop, has shown exceptional progress this season. Sown area has reached 24.140 million hectares, compared to 21.781 million hectares last year — an impressive increase of 2.359 million hectares.
Rabi Paddy Also Improving: Rabi paddy (rice) acreage has touched 1.098 million hectares, higher than last year’s 0.986 million hectares.
Overall Rabi Sowing Up by 2.789 Million Hectares: The report indicates that total Rabi sowing has increased by 2.789 million hectares year-on-year. When compared to the normal average acreage of 63.781 million hectares (based on 2019–20 to 2023–24 data), the current progress is considered encouraging.
