Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare, and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi for approving a ₹38,000 crore fertiliser subsidy during the Cabinet meeting chaired by the Prime Minister. He said this decision would provide major relief to millions of farmers across the country.

Significant Progress Reported in Agriculture Review Meeting:

During a review meeting chaired by Shri Chouhan, it was informed that the Kharif 2025 season has witnessed highly satisfactory sowing progress.

  1. The total area under paddy cultivation has reached 441.58 lakh hectares, higher than last year.
  2. Oilseeds cover 190.13 lakh hectares, led by soybean and groundnut.
  3. Pulses have been sown across 120.41 lakh hectares, marking an important step toward nutritional security.
  4. The sugarcane area stands at 59.07 lakh hectares, directly benefiting sugarcane growers.

Favourable Monsoon and Adequate Water Storage Boost Agriculture:

India’s agriculture sector has greatly benefited this year from a favourable monsoon, adequate rainfall, and improved water storage levels in reservoirs. During the weekly agricultural review, Shri Chouhan noted that most major reservoirs are at normal or above-normal levels, ensuring sufficient irrigation and timely sowing of Kharif crops.
He added that consistent soil moisture has supported healthy crop growth and could help expand the area under Rabi crops in the coming season.

Improved Water Availability and Irrigation Projects:

Agriculture Commissioner Dr. P.K. Singh highlighted that water availability for irrigation projects and reservoirs has improved significantly, promoting agricultural growth in irrigated regions. The total live storage across 161 major reservoirs in the country stands at 165.58 billion cubic metres (BCM) — 104.30% of last year’s level and 115.95% of the ten-year average.

Kharif Harvest Begins, Early Rabi Sowing Underway:

According to the review, harvesting of Kharif crops has already begun in several regions, covering around 27% of the total Kharif area. At the same time, Rabi sowing has started in its initial stages. The condition of onion, potato, and tomato crops is reported to be satisfactory nationwide, while the current stocks of rice and wheat remain above buffer norms, ensuring national food security.

Agriculture Sector Achieving New Milestones:

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated that India’s agriculture sector is achieving record growth, driven by a favourable monsoon, efficient resource planning, improved water management, and digital innovations. He said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Central Government’s farmer-friendly policies are strengthening farmers’ incomes and enhancing national food security. The Minister further assured that the Central Government, in coordination with state governments, will extend all necessary support to promote increased sowing and higher productivity of pulses and oilseeds in the upcoming Rabi season.
