Transformative Impact of NPDD Scheme: Over 31,000 Dairy Cooperatives Formed, 60,000+ Milk Testing Labs Set Up, Crores of Livestock Owners Benefited

NPDD Scheme
NPDD Scheme

Since 2014–15, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) has been implementing the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD), a centrally sponsored scheme aimed at improving the quality of milk and milk products. The scheme promotes organized milk procurement, processing, value addition, and marketing. The infrastructure developed under NPDD is benefitting milk producers across cooperative milk unions, federations, and producer companies nationwide.

120 Lakh Litres per Day Increase in Milk Procurement:

Under the NPDD scheme, approximately 31,908 Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCSs) have been formed or revived so far. Through these cooperatives, 17.63 lakh new milk producers have been connected, resulting in a daily milk procurement increase of 120.68 lakh kilograms.

61,677 Milk Testing Labs and 5,995 Bulk Milk Coolers Established:

To ensure milk quality, 61,677 village-level milk testing laboratories and 5,995 Bulk Milk Coolers (BMCs) have been installed across the country, offering a total chilling capacity of 149.35 lakh litres. Additionally, 279 dairy plant labs have been upgraded with FTIR-based milk analyzers to detect milk adulteration and enhance testing capabilities.

Target of 21,902 New Dairy Cooperatives by 2025-26:

As part of the revised NPDD plan, a target has been set to form 21,902 new dairy cooperative societies by 2025–26. For this, a financial outlay of ₹407.37 crore has been approved, including ₹211.90 crore from the Government of India and ₹195.47 crore from implementing agencies. So far, 1,804 new cooperatives have been established, offering employment to 37,793 new milk producers.

Mobile Veterinary Units Reaching Millions:

Currently, 4,019 Mobile Veterinary Units (MVUs) are operational across India, including 406 in Madhya Pradesh and 340 in Andhra Pradesh. These mobile clinics have so far provided treatment to over 96.86 lakh livestock farmers and more than 2.01 crore animals. For example, in Bhind district of Madhya Pradesh alone, 15,307 livestock owners and 19,472 animals have availed MVU services.
The NPDD scheme continues to play a crucial role in transforming India’s dairy ecosystem by enhancing infrastructure, improving quality standards, and empowering dairy farmers at the grassroots level.
