Madhya Pradesh has achieved a historic milestone in wheat procurement this year, strengthening its position as one of India’s leading grain-producing states. According to the state government, more than 103.48 lakh metric tonnes of wheat have been procured so far from over 13.36 lakh farmers at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Procurement operations are still underway across several districts.

A major highlight of this season has been the strong participation of small and marginal farmers. Government data shows that nearly 8.10 lakh small and marginal farmers have sold around 32.14 lakh metric tonnes of wheat through the procurement system, giving a major boost to rural incomes. Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Protection Minister Govind Singh Rajput said this is the highest wheat procurement recorded in the state during the last decade, excluding the Covid-19 period. He added that timely payments, improved infrastructure and better arrangements at procurement centres helped streamline the process this year.

Continuous Monitoring by Chief Minister Accelerated Procurement:

State government said Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has been closely monitoring wheat procurement activities across Madhya Pradesh. Initially, the state was given a procurement target of 78 lakh metric tonnes, but the Central Government later revised the target to 100 lakh metric tonnes after seeing the rapid pace of arrivals. The state has now crossed even that revised target.

The Chief Minister personally visited several procurement centres to inspect weighing facilities, storage arrangements and farmer amenities. He also interacted directly with farmers to review payment status and ground-level operations. To ensure farmers did not face inconvenience, the state extended the procurement deadline from May 23 to May 28 for farmers who had already booked slots.

Farmers Receive Payments Worth Over ₹22,842 Crore:

The government has already transferred more than ₹22,842.9 crore to farmers for wheat procurement. Wheat is being purchased at ₹2,625 per quintal, including the MSP of ₹2,585 per quintal along with a state bonus of ₹40 per quintal. To speed up procurement and reduce waiting time, the number of weighing machines at each procurement centre was increased from four to six. District authorities were also given the power to add additional weighing facilities wherever required. The timing for issuing weighing slips was extended from 6 PM to 10 PM, while payment processing activities are now being carried out until midnight to ensure quicker settlements for farmers.

Better Facilities Introduced at Procurement Centres:

The state government has upgraded facilities at procurement centres to improve convenience for farmers. Arrangements for drinking water, shaded seating areas and other public amenities have been strengthened across centres.

Officials said adequate supplies of gunny bags, weighing equipment, labourers, sewing machines, computers and quality-testing devices have also been ensured. Cleaning equipment such as fans and sieves has been provided to help maintain grain quality during procurement.

Positive Signal for the Agriculture Sector:

Agriculture experts believe the record procurement and timely payments will strengthen farmers financially and encourage higher crop production in future seasons. The successful procurement drive also reflects growing farmer confidence in MSP operations and government support systems. Experts say the achievement could have a positive impact on the upcoming agricultural season by improving rural cash flow and encouraging farmers to adopt better production practices.
