The Madhya Pradesh government has taken a significant step to reduce irrigation costs and promote modern, solar-based facilities for farmers. Under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Krishak Mitra Surya Yojana’, implemented on the lines of the PM-KUSUM scheme, farmers in the state will now receive up to 90% subsidy on solar pumps.
The government led by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has introduced an important reform in the scheme. Farmers are now allowed to opt for a pump with one higher capacity than the originally approved unit. This provision will help farmers install pumps according to their actual irrigation needs.
According to the state government, the scheme aims to free farmers from dependence on expensive diesel and unreliable electricity. Solar-powered pumps will ensure:
The scheme is aligned with the PM-KUSUM framework, under which farmers receive solar pumps and equipment at subsidized rates.
As per the Agriculture Department, eligible farmers will pay just 10% of the total cost of a solar pump. The remaining 90% will be covered jointly by the central and state governments as subsidy. This decision is expected to benefit small and marginal farmers the most, as they are particularly affected by frequent power cuts and the rising cost of diesel. Solar pumps ranging from 3 HP to 10 HP will be provided under the scheme.
Application Process:
After document verification, farmers will receive the approved subsidy and equipment within the stipulated time.
Boost to Farmer Income and Groundwater Conservation: The state government claims that the scheme will not only reduce irrigation expenses but also promote the use of solar energy in rural areas, ultimately increasing farmers' income. Controlled and efficient use of solar pumps is also expected to have a positive impact on groundwater levels. Experts believe that the scheme will help lakhs of farmers in the long run while easing energy-related challenges in the agricultural sector.
