The state government is implementing the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in mission mode to empower the poor, laborers, farmers, women, and youth economically. This flagship rural employment scheme is proving to be a transformative initiative for strengthening local livelihoods and boosting the rural economy through sustainable development.
Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav emphasized that MGNREGA has generated large-scale employment in rural areas. Under the scheme, activities such as farm ponds, Amrit Sarovars, wells, check dams, land leveling, bund construction, horticulture, and rainwater harvesting are being carried out. These not only provide wage employment but also help improve irrigation and water conservation infrastructure.
The state-led campaign “Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan” is a major initiative to promote rainwater harvesting and water resource management. A large number of water conservation structures are being developed under this campaign, creating widespread employment at the village level, especially during the lean agricultural season when job needs are higher. The initiative has also helped reduce distress migration from rural areas.
MGNREGA wages have become a critical source of livelihood, enabling rural workers and small farmers to invest in agriculture, manage household expenses, and support their children’s education. Infrastructure development under the scheme—including rural roads, water conservation pits, and community assets—is strengthening the rural fabric and improving living standards. The government’s vision is to ensure that every rural citizen gains access to employment locally and moves toward self-reliance. MGNREGA is playing a crucial role in achieving this goal.
