Following the establishment of the Makhana Board by the central government, the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agricultural University (DRPCAU) in Pusa, Bihar, has inaugurated a dedicated Makhana Research and Development Center. The center was officially inaugurated by Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmer Welfare, Ramnath Thakur.
The center aims to provide Makhana-producing farmers with training and technical guidance across the entire value chain, including production techniques, high-quality seeds, processing, packaging, and export. To facilitate this, the university has formed a specialized team of 17 scientists who will focus on all aspects of Makhana research and development. The inauguration was accompanied by a two-day national symposium on “Makhana Research and Development,” attended by scientists, farmers, and entrepreneurs from across the country.
Addressing the event, Minister Ramnath Thakur highlighted that Makhana has now become a preferred food item, ranging from household consumption to special occasions. Its demand is growing steadily, especially in weddings and other ceremonies. He emphasized that the central government has played a crucial role in giving Makhana international recognition. The symposium was also attended by Makhana farmers from various districts of Bihar, along with leading agricultural scientists and students from across India.
The minister noted that the university has set a new benchmark for the country through initiatives in natural farming, digital agriculture, and skill development programs. He expressed confidence that the institution will continue to play a pioneering role in Makhana research. The center is expected to significantly contribute to increasing both Makhana production and productivity, benefiting farmers and entrepreneurs alike.
Dr. Prabhat Kumar, Horticulture Commissioner, appreciated the university’s leadership and innovations, noting that its work is being recognized at the national level. He urged scientists to collaborate closely to further strengthen the institution and described the national symposium as an effective platform for sharing knowledge and experiences, which will help generate innovative solutions for the Makhana industry.
University Vice-Chancellor Dr. P. S. Pandey explained that a team of 17 specialized scientists has been established to accelerate research in all aspects of Makhana. This team includes experts in agricultural science, agricultural engineering, management, marketing, and extension services. The team will work collaboratively on seed production, farmer training, development of modern farm machinery, processing, packaging, and export, ensuring a coordinated and comprehensive approach to strengthening the entire Makhana value chain.
Goal to Double Makhana Production:
Director of Research Dr. A. K. Singh stated that the center will promote advanced research, including variety improvement, modern production techniques, and post-harvest management. These efforts are expected to improve both the quality and yield of Makhana, increasing farmers’ income. Dr. Singh also highlighted that the Vice-Chancellor has set an ambitious goal to double Makhana productivity, requiring all scientists to work in a coordinated and sustained manner to achieve this target.
