Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare, and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan visited the ICAR–Indian Institute of Maize Research (IIMR) in Ludhiana today. During his visit, he inaugurated the newly constructed administrative building and interacted with maize stakeholders, farmers, beneficiaries of rural development schemes, and members of women self-help groups (SHGs).

Focus on Maize for Agricultural Diversification:

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Chouhan emphasized that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Central Government’s key priorities are to increase food production, reduce input costs, and enhance farmers’ income.

He noted that while India is self-reliant in wheat and rice production, agricultural diversification is the next crucial step. Highlighting the importance of maize, the Minister said,
“After wheat and rice, maize is India’s third most important crop. It not only serves as a vital food grain but also has immense industrial value. Maize can emerge as a sustainable alternative to paddy, helping conserve water and increase farmers’ profits.”
Mr. Chouhan appreciated the role of ICAR–IIMR, stating that its research has significantly contributed to improving maize productivity and strengthening the diversification of Indian agriculture.

₹74 Crore Relief Package and Seed Distribution for Farmers:

Announcing major relief measures, the Minister said that the Central Government has approved ₹74 crore to support flood-affected farmers in Punjab. This amount will be used to distribute free wheat seeds, along with financial assistance for mustard and other crop seeds.

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme, ₹222 crore has already been transferred in advance to the bank accounts of 11.09 lakh farmers. Additionally, farmers affected in the horticulture sector will receive support under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) scheme.

₹1,600 Crore Relief for Flood-Hit Families:

Highlighting the Centre’s commitment to Punjab, Mr. Chouhan said that Prime Minister Modi is deeply concerned about the welfare of farmers and people affected by recent floods in the state. The government has approved a ₹1,600 crore relief package to rebuild damaged homes.

A total of 36,703 families will receive ₹1.60 lakh each, including ₹1.20 lakh for house construction and ₹40,000 for labour and sanitation facilities.

Promoting ‘Made in India’ for Economic Empowerment:

Mr. Chouhan urged citizens to prioritize ‘Made in India’ products, emphasizing that supporting indigenous goods will empower local artisans and strengthen the national economy. He said, “Using Made in India products keeps our nation’s wealth within the country and uplifts rural communities. By embracing indigenous goods, we move closer to the goal of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) while ensuring prosperity for our villages.”
