Madhya Pradesh has today become a strong symbol of self-reliance, agricultural prosperity, and rapid economic growth. This transformation has been made possible through consistent policy efforts by the state government. The state is not only among India’s fastest-growing economies but has also carved out a distinct identity in foodgrain production. As a result, the “Heart of India” is now widely recognised as the country’s new Food Basket.

The Madhya Pradesh government has stated that farmers have played the most crucial role in the state’s remarkable progress in agriculture and allied sectors. Significant achievements in agricultural output, expansion of irrigation facilities, and steady growth in farmers’ income over the past few years have firmly positioned Madhya Pradesh as India’s leading food-producing state. The state’s growth rate has now reached double digits, with agriculture and allied activities contributing the largest share. The government remains committed to transforming farming into a profitable and sustainable enterprise. Expanded irrigation coverage, reliable power supply, procurement at Minimum Support Price (MSP), the Bhavantar Payment Scheme, and large-scale farm mechanisation have brought tangible improvements to farmers’ livelihoods.

Madhya Pradesh at the Forefront of Agricultural Production:

The Chief Minister has highlighted that Madhya Pradesh now ranks among the leading states in the production of wheat, gram, lentils, soybean, and oilseeds. Surpassing traditionally strong agricultural states such as Punjab and Haryana in several crops reflects both the hard work of farmers and the impact of farmer-friendly government policies. Beyond crop farming, the state has also achieved notable growth in dairy, animal husbandry, fisheries, and food processing sectors.

Initiatives such as One District One Product (ODOP), agro and food processing units, and the expansion of cold storage infrastructure are helping farmers secure better prices for their produce. The government’s vision remains clear—water for every field, progress for every farmer, and prosperity for every household.

An Inspiring Journey of Agricultural Growth:

Not long ago, Madhya Pradesh’s agricultural economy faced challenges due to limited irrigation, erratic electricity supply, and weak infrastructure. Farmers’ incomes were modest, and rural life was marked by persistent hardships. However, the situation has changed dramatically over the past two decades. By placing agriculture and rural development at the core of its policy framework, the state government implemented decisive reforms that transformed both the direction and condition of the rural economy. According to the latest Economic Survey, Madhya Pradesh has recorded an impressive growth rate of nearly 24 percent, significantly higher than the national average.

New Milestones in Foodgrain Production:

Today, Madhya Pradesh leads the country in the production of wheat, paddy, gram, lentils, mustard, and soybean. The state has emerged as India’s largest producer of wheat. Growth in pulses and oilseeds production has resulted in a substantial increase in farmers’ incomes. Madhya Pradesh alone contributes nearly 30 percent of India’s total gram production.
In paddy cultivation as well, districts such as Balaghat, Betul, Mandla, Seoni, and Dindori have emerged as new production hubs, supplying foodgrains to various parts of the country.

New Madhya Pradesh, A New Identity:

Madhya Pradesh is now confidently scripting a new development story. From villages to cities and from farms to markets, the wave of transformation is clearly visible. Farmers are no longer just food providers; they have become active partners in building a self-reliant India. Initiatives such as solar pump schemes are also opening new pathways towards energy self-sufficiency for farmers.
The relentless efforts of farmers, combined with progressive and farmer-centric government policies, have taken Madhya Pradesh to a position that once seemed unimaginable—establishing it as India’s new agricultural powerhouse.
