Even today, nearly 80% of mango lovers in Uttar Pradesh and other parts of India prefer the unique taste of the Dussehri mango. When it comes to buying mangoes, consumers often choose Dussehri first. Despite the growing competition from new varieties entering the market, the Dussehri mango from Malihabad, Lucknow, continues to be cherished across India and abroad for its unmatched aroma and flavor.

Focus on Quality Production and Export Growth:

To make mango cultivation more profitable and aligned with international standards, the Uttar Pradesh government has launched an important initiative. The Department of Horticulture has started a pilot project promoting Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), IndGAP certification, and the establishment of model farms. The project will begin in the Lucknow region, aiming to enhance the quality of mango cultivation, spread scientific techniques, and boost export potential.

Approval from the Union Agriculture Ministry:

According to Additional Chief Secretary (Horticulture) B.L. Meena, the project is being implemented in collaboration with Agriculture GAP Digital Solutions Pvt. Ltd. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, has approved a proposal of ₹5 lakh (excluding GST) for the project.

Modern Training and Benefits for Farmers:

This pilot project, mango growers will receive hands-on training in scientific agricultural techniques. They will learn about traceability systems at the farm level, crop protection management, balanced use of water and nutrients, and compliance with international quality standards.

Through FPOs (Farmer Producer Organizations) and model farms managed by progressive farmers, growers will also experience the practical benefits of the IndGAP-based farming system.

Improving Quality and Export Competitiveness:

Meena added that once successfully implemented, the project will promote IndGAP certification in other mango-producing districts of the state. This will encourage farmers to produce export-quality mangoes and significantly improve the overall quality and market value of mangoes from Uttar Pradesh.

Dussehri Mango Preserving Its Legacy: While new mango varieties continue to enter the market, none can match the sweetness and fragrance of the Malihabadi Dussehri. This timeless variety remains the top choice not only in India but also in international markets, maintaining its legacy as one of the most loved mangoes in the world.
