Karnataka government has announced significant relief for farmers affected by this year’s floods, approving an additional assistance package of over ₹1,033 crore. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the new allocation is separate from the previously distributed SDRF aid and has been released to provide immediate support to affected farmers.
According to government data, 14.58 lakh hectares of crops have been damaged, and over 14.24 lakh farmers have been directly impacted due to continuous heavy rainfall and flooding across the state.
The Chief Minister noted that although compensation was earlier provided under SDRF norms, the actual losses far exceeded initial estimates. Therefore, the state government decided to extend additional financial relief. Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda confirmed that the sanctioned amount has already been transferred to the accounts of district deputy commissioners, who will now distribute the funds to eligible farmers.
The government has clarified that the compensation will be transferred directly to farmers’ bank accounts via the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS). Authorities claim the entire process will remain transparent, ensuring that the assistance reaches beneficiaries without delays.
Reiterating Karnataka’s demand for central assistance, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the state has already submitted proposals seeking ₹1,521.67 crore for recovery and reconstruction, along with ₹614.9 crore as compensation. The government has also informed the Centre that total property losses from floods and adverse weather have reached ₹3,455 crore. The Chief Minister expressed hope that the Centre will release funds soon, considering the severe hardships faced by farmers.
Siddaramaiah stated that reducing the distress of farmers remains the government’s top priority. He assured that Karnataka stands firmly with its farming community and will continue making every effort to minimize their difficulties.
