The Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), Varanasi, has signed a significant agreement with Eurogreen Crop Sciences, granting the company a license for the commercial seed production of two popular varieties—Kashi Nidhi (cowpea) and Kashi Sahishnu (okra). This initiative is expected to provide farmers with access to high-quality seeds, resulting in higher yields and better income.
IIVR’s “Kashi Brand” varieties are witnessing growing interest from seed companies, positioning Varanasi as an emerging hub for vegetable seed production. Several seed firms have already been licensed for other Kashi varieties, further strengthening the brand’s reach and recognition.
The Kashi Sahishnu okra variety, in particular, offers strong resistance to two major viral diseases, reducing dependence on pesticides, lowering cultivation costs, and improving productivity. Farmers adopting this variety can expect an income increase of up to 20–25%. Moreover, its extended fruiting period ensures sustained earnings over a longer duration.
Highlighting the institute’s achievements, IIVR Director Dr. Rajesh Kumar shared that the institute has developed more than 129 improved varieties across 27 vegetable crops. He emphasized the importance of public–private partnerships in accelerating the adoption of these varieties among farmers. According to him, the licensing model not only supports farmer incomes but also promotes sustainable vegetable cultivation practices.
Towards Higher Income and Sustainable Farming:
This collaboration will ensure farmers have access to pure and reliable seeds, while technology transfer will enhance income opportunities and encourage eco-friendly, low-cost farming methods. The initiative is expected to strengthen both agricultural profitability and sustainability in the long run.
