Rain and Hail

New Delhi, May 25, 2025 Residents of North and Northeast India must brace for five days of intense weather disruptions, as forecasted by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). From heavy rain and hailstorms in the hills to dust storms and lightning strikes in the plains, the upcoming week could bring significant challenges across multiple states.
IMD has clearly warned, “This week won’t be mild!” Here's a breakdown of the regions that will be hit the hardest and the precautions people must take:

Rain and Hail in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand:

  • Himachal Pradesh is expected to witness light to moderate rainfall between May 25 and May 29.
  • Uttarakhand may experience similar conditions till May 30, with heavy rainfall and hailstorms possible on May 25 and between May 28-30.
  • Thunderstorms and strong winds may also occur, increasing the risk of localized damage.

Stormy Weather for Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh & Gilgit-Baltistan:

From May 27 to 30, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad could see light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and winds gusting at 40–50 km/h. There's a risk of lightning strikes and landslides in hilly regions due to unstable weather conditions.

Strong Dust Storms in Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana & Uttar Pradesh:

  • The plains of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan will experience weather disturbances from May 25 to 30.
  • On May 25, western Rajasthan may be hit by dust storms with wind speeds of 50–60 km/h, occasionally touching 70 km/h.
  • Eastern Rajasthan may also witness strong winds and dusty conditions during this period.

Hailstorm & Lightning Alerts Across North India:

  1. Uttarakhand has been placed on alert for potential hailstorms on May 25.
  2. Thunderstorms and lightning are expected across several states in North India.
  3. IMD has advised residents to avoid standing near open fields, tall trees, or electrical poles during lightning.

Heavy Rainfall to Lash Northeast India:  All seven states — Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura — will see persistent rainfall over the next week.

  • Very heavy rainfall is likely to occur over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on May 27 and 28.
  • On May 29–30, Assam and Meghalaya could see extreme downpours, triggering flood-like situations in low-lying areas.

Farmers on Alert – Crops at Risk: The stormy weather may cause significant damage to crops like mango, wheat, and vegetables. IMD has advised farmers to:

  • Cover their crops properly
  • Delay pesticide sprays for a few days
  • Consider crop insurance as a preventive measure

What to Do – What to Avoid?

  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid using electronic gadgets like mobile phones and televisions.
  • Farmers should harvest crops early where possible.
  • Keep children indoors and avoid riding two-wheelers during heavy rain and winds.
  • During lightning, avoid standing under trees or in open areas to ensure your safety.

Conclusion: With the IMD issuing strong alerts, people across North and Northeast India should stay weather-aware and prioritize safety. Whether you’re a commuter, farmer, or resident in hilly terrain, the next 5 days demand extra caution.
