As the monsoon season (Sawan) sets in across North India, preparations for paddy cultivation are in full swing. However, successful rice farming requires more than just transplanting—timely actions, scientific methods, and proper crop care are essential for boosting yields. Dr. Shushil Kumar, an agricultural scientist from Kannauj, shares five crucial recommendations that can help farmers maximize their paddy production this season.

  1. Transplant at the Right Time: Timely transplanting plays a major role in ensuring a successful paddy crop. Generally, paddy transplantation is done from late June to the third week of July. This year, farmers are advised to plan their transplanting according to local weather and soil moisture conditions to avoid stunted growth.
  2. Prepare a Strong Nursery: A healthy nursery is key to a productive paddy field. For one hectare of land, 30–35 kg of seeds are sufficient. Seeds should be treated with fungicides like Thiram or Carbendazim to improve germination and protect seedlings from diseases.
  3. Maintain Proper Soil Moisture and Field Conditions: Before transplanting, lightly irrigate the field and plough it to maintain optimal soil moisture. The land should be level and adequately moist to help seedlings root firmly and absorb nutrients effectively.
  4. Use the Scientific Method for Transplanting: Seedlings aged 15–20 days are best suited for transplanting. Plant two seedlings at one spot with a spacing of 20x15 cm between them. This spacing allows proper sunlight, air circulation, and nutrient absorption, which also helps in disease prevention.
  5. Don’t Neglect Crop Management: Post-transplantation, maintaining moisture in the field is critical. Keep a thin layer of water in the field to support early growth. Regular weeding should be done to prevent weed competition. For pest and disease control, use appropriate doses of organic or chemical treatments. Delayed transplanting can hinder plant growth and reduce yields.

Expert Advice for Farmers: By following the right techniques and transplanting on time, farmers can achieve high yields at a lower cost. Consistent field monitoring, technical guidance, and smart water management practices can bring transformative results in farming. In today’s agriculture, awareness and scientific approach are a farmer’s greatest strengths.
