The Department of Fertilizers is ensuring timely and adequate availability of fertilizers across the country for farmers. Ahead of every sowing season, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare assesses the fertilizer requirements of each state, based on which state-wise and company-wise supply plans are finalized.
Over the past decade, India has made remarkable progress in fertilizer production and global partnerships. Urea production has increased from 22.715 million metric tonnes in 2013-14 to 30.667 million metric tonnes in 2024-25, reflecting a 35% rise. Similarly, the production of DAP and NPK fertilizers has risen from 11.009 million metric tonnes to 15.878 million metric tonnes during the same period, registering a 44% growth.
Through diplomatic efforts and long-term agreements, the Government of India has ensured that farmers face no shortage of fertilizers. Indian fertilizer companies have signed a deal with Morocco for the supply of 2.5 million metric tonnes of DAP and TSP. In July 2025, India also entered into a five-year agreement with Saudi Arabia to supply 3.1 million metric tonnes of DAP annually.
By August 20, 2025, urea sales had increased by more than 1.3 MMT compared to last year. Despite this surge, no state has faced any shortage.
To protect farmers from high international prices, the government continues to provide heavy subsidies. A 45-kg bag of urea is available to farmers at just ₹242 (excluding taxes). DAP is available at ₹1,350 per bag, supported by a special subsidy package on both imported and domestically produced DAP.
Monitoring and Strict Action against Black Marketing:
The Department of Fertilizers is closely coordinating with states, port authorities, the Ministry of Railways, and companies to maintain smooth supply. Strict action is also being taken against black marketing and hoarding. Since April 2025, 199,581 inspections and raids have been conducted, 7,927 notices issued, 3,623 licenses cancelled/suspended, and 311 FIRs registered.
