Bihar Government Offers 75% Subsidy for Onion Cultivation – Apply Now

Good news for farmers in Bihar! To boost farmers’ income and increase onion production, the Bihar Government has launched the Kharif Onion Area Expansion Scheme 2025-26.

Under this scheme, farmers can grow kharif onions at significantly reduced costs, with direct financial assistance via DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer). The subsidy covers 75% of the seed cost, and seeds will be supplied directly by the Bihar State Seed Corporation, Patna.

This initiative not only reduces cultivation costs but also helps farmers achieve higher yields and better profits. If you plan to cultivate onions this kharif season, this scheme is a golden opportunity.

Eligible Districts:

The scheme benefits farmers in the following 18 districts of Bihar: Banka, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, Bhojpur, Buxar, Darbhanga, Gopalganj, Lakhisarai, Muzaffarpur, Nalanda, Patna, Rohtas, Samastipur, Saran, Sheikhpura, Sitamarhi, Siwan, and Vaishali.

Area Limits:

  1. Minimum area: 0.25 acre (0.1 hectare)
  2. Maximum area: 5 acres (2 hectares)

Subsidy & Seed Details:

  1. Seed requirement for kharif onion cultivation: 10 kg per hectare
  2. Seed cost: ₹2,450 per kg (or actual cost, whichever is lower)
  3. Estimated cost per hectare: ₹24,500
  4. Government subsidy: 75%, i.e., ₹18,375 per hectare
  5. Seeds will be provided by Bihar State Seed Corporation, Patna

Required Documents for Eligibility:

  1. Land ownership certificate
  2. Updated revenue receipt (from past two years)
  3. Online updated receipt
  4. Genealogy proof (if name is unclear)
  5. Declaration form for non-tenant farmers (format available online)

Farmer Guidelines:

  1. Before applying, check your mobile number and bank details on the DBT portal.
  2. Subsidy will be provided via DBT in-kind or DBT in-cash through CFMS directly to farmers.

Beneficiary selection ratio:

  1. General category: 78.537%
  2. Scheduled Caste (SC): 20%
  3. Scheduled Tribe (ST): 1.463%
  4. 30% women beneficiaries in each category

Application Process

  1. Register on the DBT portal.
  2. Apply online for the Kharif Onion Scheme.
  3. Upload required documents.
  4. Confirm terms by checking the acknowledgment box and submit the application.
  5. Save the application number for future reference.
