The Bihar government has rolled out the Coconut Sapling Distribution Scheme (2025–26), aiming to promote coconut plantation even in non-coastal regions. Traditionally restricted to coastal states, coconut cultivation will now be encouraged in Bihar, opening new opportunities for farmers as well as urban residents.

Under this scheme, beneficiaries will receive coconut saplings at 75% subsidy, making them highly affordable for both commercial farming and household gardening. The government believes this move will not only boost farmers’ income but also enhance greenery and environmental sustainability in the state.

Key Objectives:

  • Promote coconut cultivation in a non-traditional region like Bihar.
  • Encourage farmers and urban residents to plant coconut trees in fields, backyards, or kitchen gardens.
  • Increase farmer income while supporting environmental protection.

Sapling Cost and Subsidy:

  • Unit cost per sapling: ₹85 (₹70 production + ₹15 transportation).
  • Government subsidy: 75% or ₹63.75 per sapling.
  • Farmer’s contribution: only the remaining cost.

Allocation of Saplings:

  • Minimum 5 saplings and maximum 712 saplings per beneficiary.
  • Planting target: 178 saplings per hectare.
  • Distribution at subsidized rates across all 38 districts of Bihar.

Who Can Benefit?

  • Both farmers and urban residents.
  • Proof of land ownership (or valid family lineage certificate if land is not in applicant’s name) required.
  • Saplings can be planted in fields, gardens, or kitchen spaces.

Distribution Process:

  • Saplings will be supplied by the Coconut Development Board, Patna.
  • Distribution through the Assistant Director of Horticulture in each district.
  • Beneficiaries must deposit their contribution to confirm availability.

Application Guidelines:

  • Applications to be submitted online only.

Government’s Vision:

  • Expand coconut production in Bihar.
  • Provide farmers with an alternative commercial crop and additional income.
  • Create new opportunities in horticulture.
  • Promote greenery and environmental protection in both rural and urban areas.

The Coconut Sapling Distribution Scheme marks a significant step in diversifying Bihar’s agriculture. With a 75% subsidy, the program makes coconut cultivation accessible to both farmers and city dwellers, paving the way for increased income and a greener future across the state.
