Several parts of North India are currently facing extreme heat. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is little chance of immediate relief from the heat in Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Punjab. However, a change in weather is expected around May 18 or 19.
Cities like Lucknow, Varanasi, Ghaziabad, and Prayagraj are experiencing peak summer conditions. In most parts of the state, the maximum temperature has reached around 43°C. Hot winds and strong sunlight have made daily life difficult. IMD has indicated that due to a weather system forming over the Bay of Bengal, some areas in the state may receive light rain within the next 48 hours. While this may bring some relief with cloudy skies and light winds, it is unlikely to cause a major drop in temperature.
The scorching heat continues in Delhi and the surrounding NCR region. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 41°C, which is well above normal. Despite light rain and a thunderstorm on Tuesday night, residents got no real relief due to high humidity and strong sunshine the next day. IMD has predicted light drizzle on May 16, but significant relief is expected only after May 19. Until then, people in Delhi will have to deal with hot winds and rising temperatures. Wind speeds may range between 15 to 35 km/h.
Punjab is also facing rising temperatures. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature reached 43.6°C, which is 2.3°C above normal. IMD estimates that the temperature could rise by another 2 to 3 degrees over the next few days. A western disturbance is expected to become active from May 18, which could bring a change in weather. The department has issued a yellow alert in Punjab starting May 18, with chances of light rain and thunderstorms.
Conclusion: Extreme heat is affecting large parts of North India, and immediate relief is unlikely. Residents of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, and Punjab are advised to stay cautious and take necessary precautions. The weather department is monitoring the situation closely and urges people to follow updates regularly.
