North India Weather Update: Western Disturbance to Bring Rain, Snowfall and Hailstorm, Says IMD

Weather conditions across several parts of North India are set to change once again as a fresh western disturbance becomes active from 27 January. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), widespread rainfall and snowfall are expected over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh. The weather system may also bring thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph at isolated locations. Uttarakhand is also likely to experience widespread rainfall and snowfall on 27 and 28 January.

Heavy Rainfall, Snowfall and Hailstorm Warning:

IMD has issued a warning for heavy rainfall or snowfall at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on 27 January. In addition, hailstorm activity is likely over Jammu & Kashmir on the same day, while isolated parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan may also witness hailstorms.

Weather to Shift from Punjab to Chhattisgarh:

Weather conditions are expected to deteriorate across several north and central Indian states. On 27 January, Punjab weather, Haryana and Chandigarh may receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph. West Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are likely to witness lightning with strong winds blowing at 30–40 kmph. In Madhya Pradesh, isolated locations may experience light rainfall with lightning on 27 and 28 January, while similar weather activity is expected over Chhattisgarh on 28 January.

Weather Conditions in Eastern and Central India:

On 28 January, Bihar is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 30–40 kmph. Meanwhile, lightning activity is also expected over parts of Madhya Maharashtra and the Marathwada region on 27 January.

Minimum Temperature Forecast Across India:

According to IMD, minimum temperatures over northwest India are likely to rise gradually by 3–5°C over the next two days. Central India may initially witness no significant change, followed by a drop of 2–3°C, and then a rise of 2–4°C in the subsequent days.

Maharashtra, minimum temperatures are expected to fall by 2–4°C during the next 24 hours, followed by a rise of 2–3°C over the next two days, after which temperatures may remain stable. Gujarat is likely to see a gradual rise of 2–3°C in minimum temperatures over the next three days, while no major change is expected across the remaining parts of the country.

Dense Fog, Cold Wave and Cold Day Warning:

IMD has also warned that dense fog may prevail during morning and night hours over Uttarakhand till 27 January, Himachal Pradesh from 28 to 31 January, Uttar Pradesh on 27, 29 and 30 January, Rajasthan from 28 to 30 January, and Bihar from 29 to 31 January.

Cold wave conditions are likely at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh from 29 to 31 January, and over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh from 28 to 31 January.
Additionally, cold day conditions may occur at isolated locations over Himachal Pradesh on 27 January.
