Union Minister of Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare, and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, chaired a high-level review meeting on September 1 in New Delhi to assess the agricultural situation across the country. The meeting focused on rainfall distribution, crop conditions, and the impact of recent floods in certain parts of Punjab.
During the meeting, Shri Chouhan assured that farmers in Punjab affected by the floods need not worry, as the Central Government stands firmly with them during this natural calamity. He announced that he would soon visit the flood-hit regions of Punjab to personally review the situation and ensure all possible assistance for farmers.
Agriculture Secretary Dr. Devesh Chaturvedi, along with senior officials, presented a detailed overview of the nation’s agricultural status. It was highlighted that the total area under kharif sowing this year has improved compared to last year. Apart from foodgrain crops, the horticulture sector was also reviewed, with a special focus on the production and pricing of potatoes, onions, and tomatoes.
Officials informed the Minister that several states have received above-average rainfall this year, leading to better reservoir levels and favorable conditions for crop growth. This rainfall is expected to significantly benefit farmers in the upcoming season.
Push for Integrated Farming Systems: Shri Chouhan emphasized the need to encourage farmers to adopt horticulture alongside traditional farming and move towards an integrated farming system. He underlined that sustainable agricultural growth requires diversification—combining foodgrain production with alternative crops. Promoting integrated farming on a large scale, he said, will be key to increasing farmers’ income and meeting future demands.
