Farmers and traders, here’s big news from the agricultural markets. According to the latest mandi reports, onion prices have surged dramatically across several key markets in Madhya Pradesh. Between July 16 and July 22, rates in some mandis jumped from ₹400–₹500 to as high as ₹1300–₹1500 per quintal a staggering increase of up to ₹850. This sharp rise is welcome news for farmers but may affect household budgets as retail onion prices climb. The surge is primarily due to lower arrivals, deterioration of stored stock, rising demand from festive consumption, and strategic buying by traders.

Here’s a detailed mandi-wise report to help farmers make better selling decisions.

Reasons Behind the Price Surge:

  1. Spoilage in Storage – Rising heat and humidity have led to rotting in stored onions, increasing demand for fresh arrivals.
  2. Seasonal Demand – The start of Shravan month and approaching festivals have boosted onion consumption.
  3. Trader Hoarding – Anticipating further price increases, traders are stockpiling onions, tightening supply in the market.

Top Gaining Mandis:

  1. Alot Mandi recorded the highest jump, with onion prices rising by ₹849 per quintal in just six days.
  2. Sehore, Ratlam, and Sanawad also saw notable spikes, with ₹600–₹700 gains, showing strong market momentum.

What Farmers Are Saying:

A farmer in Sehore mandi said: “Earlier our onions were fetching below ₹500. We couldn’t even recover costs. Now with prices over ₹1000, it finally feels like a relief though we’re keeping a close eye on the market as it can reverse any time.”

Advice for Farmers

  1. Monitor nearby mandi prices before dispatching your produce.
  2. If your area’s rates are low and storage is feasible, wait for a better price window.
  3. Sell premium-quality onions now while the market is strong.
  4. Stay updated with daily price trends, as fluctuations may continue.
