Under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, the Madhya Pradesh government has launched a significant initiative for the protection and care of stray cattle. The state cabinet has approved the “Self-Reliant Cow Shelter Establishment Policy – 2025”, aimed at establishing large-scale cow shelters with private sector participation.
Minister of State for Animal Husbandry and Dairy (Independent Charge), Mr. Lakhan Patel, stated that this policy will ensure proper care of stray and destitute cattle while also promoting animal husbandry and dairy-based employment. The initiative is expected to increase farmers’ income and strengthen the rural economy.
Double Subsidy for Cattle Feed: To enhance the nutrition and maintenance of cattle, the subsidy for cattle feed in shelters has been increased from ₹20 to ₹40 per animal per day. This will significantly support better upkeep of the livestock.
The new policy, private investors will be granted rights to use government land to establish large-scale cow shelters. A maximum of 125 acres of land will be allotted for managing a minimum of 5,000 cattle. For every additional 1,000 cattle, 25 more acres will be provided. An extra 5 acres may also be allotted for setting up units to produce products from cow dung, urine, or milk.
