Big GST Relief for Poor and Middle Class, Most Items at 5% Slab

The GST Council has announced a significant overhaul in the tax structure, bringing major relief to farmers, households, and consumers. Chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the Council decided to scrap the 12% and 28% tax slabs and replace them with a simplified two-tier GST system of 5% and 18%, effective from September 22.
Big Savings on Daily Essentials

Common household products will now be much more affordable:

Strict Tax on Luxury and Harmful Goods: While providing relief to the masses, the Council also tightened taxes on harmful products. Pan masala, tobacco, cigarettes, and bidis will now attract a 40% GST slab.

States Welcome the Reform: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman confirmed that the decision was taken unanimously, with full support from state finance ministers. The government aims to make essential goods affordable and support farmers, workers, and ordinary citizens through this reform.
