In a major boost for farmers in Odisha, the Government of India has approved procurement of five key crops under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) scheme. Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan cleared the proposal following the state’s request, with the total MSP value of approvals exceeding ₹1,428.31 crore. This move is expected to directly benefit farmers by ensuring assured prices and timely procurement.
The decision was taken during a virtual meeting held at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi, between Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Odisha’s Deputy Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh. After reviewing the state’s proposals, production estimates, and procurement requirements, the Centre approved procurement of five major crops. The Union Minister emphasized that while full support will be extended to farmers, the procurement process must remain transparent and should be carried out directly from farmers.
The entire procurement process will be conducted under the PM-AASHA scheme for a period of 90 days. The state government is already implementing a PoS-based procurement system to ensure transparency, efficiency, and accountability in operations.
During the meeting, the Union Minister highlighted the importance of increasing sunflower production. He noted that the crop has been declining in several regions, but its expansion in Odisha is encouraging. The Centre assured full technical and scientific support to further enhance sunflower cultivation in the state.
