State Government Prepares for Possible Gas Shortage, Household LPG Supply Given Top Priority

LPG Consumption in Madhya Pradesh Is Domestic
LPG Consumption in Madhya Pradesh Is Domestic

With geopolitical tensions rising worldwide and uncertainties surrounding global energy supply, authorities have increased monitoring to ensure the steady availability of LPG. In Madhya Pradesh, nearly 93 percent of total LPG consumption comes from household users, prompting the state government to prioritize uninterrupted access to cooking gas.
Petroleum companies and refineries have been directed to operate at full capacity and focus primarily on LPG production for domestic use. The move aims to prevent any disruption in household gas supply and ensure that citizens do not face inconvenience if global energy conditions become more volatile.

93% of LPG Consumption in Madhya Pradesh Is Domestic:

Households account for the overwhelming share of LPG consumption in Madhya Pradesh. Because of this high dependence, the state government has emphasized maintaining a stable supply of domestic gas cylinders. Oil companies and refineries have been instructed to maximize production and maintain adequate stocks to meet household demand.

Across India, there are about 191 million LPG consumers, the majority of whom rely on the fuel for daily cooking. While temporary supply constraints could affect cylinder availability in certain areas, officials say precautionary steps are being taken to minimize any inconvenience for domestic users.

Two Committees Formed to Monitor Fuel Supply:

To keep a close watch on the situation, the central government has constituted two ministerial committees to review matters related to petroleum and gas supply. These committees will monitor the availability, distribution network, and price trends of petrol, diesel, and LPG. Regular meetings will be held to assess supply conditions, and swift decisions will be made as needed. The aim is to ensure that fuel distribution across the country remains stable and that citizens do not face disruptions in essential energy supplies.

State Government Strengthens Preparedness:

Anticipating the possibility of a gas shortage, the Madhya Pradesh government has also stepped up its preparedness. Two ministerial committees have been set up at the state level to track the supply of LPG and other petroleum products.

LPG production companies have been advised to operate at full capacity and focus on LPG output rather than other by-products. Commercial LPG consumers have been urged to exercise restraint in usage for the time being. Priority supply of commercial cylinders will mainly be provided to educational institutions and hospitals, while other consumers will coordinate with local authorities for supply arrangements.

Changes in Cylinder Booking Rules:

Response to the current supply situation, some gas companies have revised their cylinder booking policies. Earlier, consumers could book their next cylinder immediately after receiving one. Now, many companies have increased the waiting period to around 25 days, while in some cases the gap has been extended to 30 days. The change is intended to balance demand and supply so that LPG cylinders can reach a larger number of households without disruption.

CM Reviews Fuel Supply Situation:

After a cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav reviewed the supply of petrol, diesel, and cooking gas with ministers and senior officials. During the discussion, MSME Minister Chetanya Kashyap pointed out that many small industries depend heavily on commercial LPG cylinders and could face difficulties if supplies are not maintained.

Officials from the Food and Civil Supplies Department informed the meeting that the state currently has around 10 days of petrol and diesel stock and about 7 days of PNG and CNG reserves. Regular supply continues across the state, although authorities remain particularly cautious about LPG availability to ensure that household cooking gas remains adequately stocked.

Key Directions Issued to States:

  1. Priority supply for domestic LPG consumers
  2. Refineries directed to increase LPG production for household use
  3. Continuous monitoring of petrol and diesel supply and distribution systems
  4. Arrangements for additional supply if demand rises
