Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, inaugurated the Annual Conference of Vice-Chancellors of Agricultural Universities and Directors of ICAR Institutes at the NASC Complex in New Delhi.
In his address, the Minister emphasized that the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is a symbol of national pride and plays a leading role in agricultural research and extension. He stated that realizing the vision of a "Developed India" requires the advancement of agriculture and the empowerment of farmers. Comparing farmers to deities who nurture the earth, he underscored the responsibility of ensuring their welfare and dignity.

The Minister announced his plan to undertake a padayatra (foot march) on May 25–26, to directly interact with farmers and understand their issues firsthand. He reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring food security, replenishing national grain reserves, and establishing India as the “food basket of the world.” Addressing the attendees, he said, “We are one team, and our mantra is: One Nation, One Agriculture, One Team.”
Call for Innovation and Research-Driven Agriculture: Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Bhagirath Choudhary, emphasized that agriculture is the backbone of the country and farmers are its soul. He stressed that the dream of a developed India cannot be fulfilled without empowered and resilient farmers. Addressing the impact of climate change on agriculture, he called for collective action and innovation-driven, research-based agriculture. He urged all participants to take a pledge that the conference should lead to actionable steps in policy-making, innovation, and effective implementation—not just remain a platform for discussion.
Participation of ICAR Leadership and Senior Officials: Dr. Mangi Lal Jat, Secretary (DARE) and Director General (ICAR), noted that the conference will play a crucial role in shaping the future direction of agricultural research, education, and extension. He emphasized that ICAR should act as the “elder brother” in the national agricultural education and research system, guiding agricultural universities and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) for coordinated growth.
