Smart Agriculture Takes a Leap: AI Unlocks New Pathways for Farming, Simplifies Crop Mapping and Sowing Decisions

Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture
Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture

The government is increasingly adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) to boost productivity, sustainability, and farmers’ income across the agriculture sector. Several AI-driven innovations are now reaching farmers directly, making the agricultural supply chain more efficient and data-driven.

‘Kisan e-Mitra’: An AI-Powered Digital Companion for Farmers:

“Kisan e-Mitra” is a voice-enabled AI chatbot designed to answer farmers’ everyday queries in a simple and accessible manner. The chatbot provides information on major schemes such as PM-Kisan, Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), and Kisan Credit Card (KCC).

Available in 11 regional languages, it currently resolves queries of over 8,000 farmers every day and has already answered more than 9.3 million questions. The government now plans to expand the service to additional agricultural and rural welfare schemes.

AI & Machine Learning Strengthen Pest Surveillance:

To combat rising pest attacks triggered by climate change, AI-powered tools are being integrated into the national pest surveillance system. More than 10,000 agricultural extension workers are already using this technology.
Farmers can upload pest images via mobile phones and receive instant analysis, enabling timely pest control and reducing crop damage. The system currently covers 66 crops and over 432 pest species.
Additionally, satellite-based crop mapping and AI-driven analytics are helping identify and monitor crop patterns across regions, improving accuracy in planning and response.

AI-Enhanced Monsoon Forecasting:

For Kharif 2025, an AI-based pilot project was implemented in 13 states to provide localized monsoon onset predictions. The initiative, supported by the Development Innovation Lab-India, utilized advanced models such as NeuralGCM, ECMWF’s AI Forecasting System (AIFS), and 125 years of IMD’s historic rainfall records.
These AI-generated forecasts offered district-level predictions for monsoon arrival, helping farmers choose the optimal sowing date and reduce climate-related risks.

Outreach to Farmers:

  • Over 38.8 million farmers across 13 states received SMS alerts via the m-Kisan Portal
  • Messages were delivered in five languages: Hindi, Odia, Marathi, Bengali, and Punjabi

Farmer Response: 31% to 52% Changed Their Decisions: Telephone surveys conducted in Madhya Pradesh and Bihar revealed that 31% to 52% of farmers adjusted key decisions such as sowing dates, land preparation schedules, crop choices, and input planning based on AI-generated advisories.
