  • Red rot is the most destructive disease of sugarcane caused by the fungus Colletotrichum falcatum.
  • It primarily attacks the cane stalk.
  • The fungus enters the stalk and destroys the internal tissues.
     
  • Red-colored rotting inside the cane
  • White patches or streaks near the nodes
  • Leaves turn yellow and dry
  • Stalk becomes weak and breaks easily
     
  • Immediately remove and destroy infected plants
  • Use resistant and healthy sugarcane varieties
  • Follow a crop rotation of 2–3 years
  • Use only certified and disease-free seed cane; avoid rotten or weak setts
