• Caused by the fungus Ceratocystis paradoxa, which rots sugarcane setts.
• Infected setts fail to sprout or produce very weak shoots.
• Internal tissues turn brown or black.
 

  • Setts fail to germinate
  • Dark brown or black discoloration inside
  • Rotting with a foul odor
     

• Treat seed setts in hot water at 50°C for 2 hours
• Prevent waterlogging in the field
